I feel so lucky to have had such awesome dogs. After losing Kumie, my Akita, I thought I would never have a dog as good as her. I still miss my Kumie; she was the perfect dog: kind, patient, smart, and laid back. I could take her anywhere, and she would fit in. Even people who did not like dogs liked her.
When I got Penny, my Connemara Jack Russell Terrier, I was afraid she was going to have a hard time filling Kumie's shoes. It is always frustrating when you go from a perfectly trained adult dog to a new puppy who bites, chews, whines, gets into everything, and is not house-trained. Penny has been amazing! She is sweet, fun, smart, both energetic and laid back which is perfect, and has fit in so quickly that it astounds me. She is a very quick learner, and is already healing off leash at 5 months old. She is not a barker like many Jacks, and I have been able to take her everywhere too.
Everyone asks why I went from a 168 lb. English Mastiff, 90 lb. Akita, and then 80 lb. Akita to a 10 lb. Terrier. I have always wanted a Jack, and when I found this type of Irish Jack who is smaller and calmer than the traditional Jack, I was sold. I like that they are a big dog in a little dog body. Penny is much bolder than my bigger dogs ever were. Not much scares her. I like being able to pick her up. I felt so bad when Kumie got old and would stand at the top of the stairs not wanting to go down them. I think that is when I decided to get a Jack. I am now an Akita and CJRT girl. They are both very special breeds!
